Stomach Pains after run
Question
Hello,
I am 25 and I am in pretty good shape. I enjoy exercising in general (I do a lot of biking & swimming) but just began running in May. Since the beginning of May, I have run about 3-5 miles every other night. Last weekend, I ran a 10K and was very happy to finish in just under an hour - 58:50.
My problem is that about half an hour after the race, I began to have awful stomach cramps - it felt like I had been punched in the gut. I tried some stretches & drank plenty of water, but couldn't make them go away - I finally managed to fall asleep, and my stomach was still sore (but not as bad as the night before) when I woke up. I am wondering what caused the cramps, and what I can do to avoid them in the future. I had a really good time running the 10K and would like to run another in July or August.
I should note that about three hours before the race, which was run in the evening, I had a peanut butter & honey sandwich, a banana, and some cheese, and then I had a granola bar about an hour before the race. I drank about one water bottle (16oz) about a half hour or so before the race and another after the race.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts you have!

Answer
Hi Christina
It appears to me it was the food you ate so close to to the start. When you race you want to allow three and a half to four hours and your food intake should consist of a small easily digestible meals such as a little rice, pasta, potatoes, banana. No protein sources like peanut butter yogurt milk meat products granola bars cheese. That will do the trick. You just had to much food in your system.Any questions just get in touch.
all the best
