Knee Pain and numbness in foot

Question
Hi John,
First off, thank you for all the great information you post. I am a 35 yo woman, and had been running about 25-35 miles/week earlier this summer (I used to run more than that when training for marathons etc.) About 2 months ago I started suffering significant knee pain in my left knee, so stopped running for a few weeks and tried working on my ITB because I'd had ITB issues in the past. That wasn't doing anything, so I went to PT and was diagnosed with runner's knee, attributed mostly to tight hip flexors. For the past month I have been doing lots of stretching, icing and some quad strenghtening exercises. After reading your posts about chrondomalacia, I have also started riding the stationery bike and taking Vitamin C 3x/day. My knee does seem to be getting better, but I haven't tried running recently and I think it is still going to hurt when I run. However, it is my most recent issue that I would like some insight on. My left calf and foot feel numb at times. I noticed it first last week, but then it went away and I attributed it to icing a nerve or something. But today I was on my feet all morning and when I went to take my sneakers off, I noticed my foot and calf (especially the foot) were numb to the touch. I can walk fine and there is not really a strange sensation there, but when I touch it it feels totally numb. Any thought on what could be going on here? I am set to call the ortho tomorrow but am not sure how long it will take to get in to see him. Thanks in advance for your response!

Answer
Hi brooke
One of the most common reason for most injuries is including what your experiencing such as numbness is a tracking and alignment issue of the muscular skeleton system. It is quite normal because of the nature of the many variety of terrains and workouts we experience. It is hard to pin point your situation with out asking you many more questions, but i,m sure it is directly related to what i mentioned before and it could be as simple as something in the pelvis core area pressing on a nerve. The answer for this is gradually re balancing the muscular skeleton system.I would not jump into the orthopedic office at this time unless you want a lot of defensive medicine practiced on you with many follow ups for him to avoid law suit.If you would like to call me here in albuquerque i can go over in much more detail and drill down and try to pin point your situation and a course of rehabbing. You can get my number on my web site and can call any time from 6am on.If you have other questions just get in touch. It is just very hard to put all my thoughts in clarity with email and a lack of questions i need answered.

All the best

John
