Knee Injury in competitive Sprinter!
Question
Hi John, I have read previous answers regarding knee problems and would like to present my situation to procure your opinion, I'm a 63 year old nationally ranked sprinter who last month completed 8 meets in 8 weeks, possibly too much, inmy last meet, I was running the 200m, as I was coming out of the turn I felt a catching feeling on the outside of my right knee, I took what can be described as a bunny hop and finished the race. I did NOT hear a pop and felt no pain or I would have pulled up. Approximately 10 minutes after the race I was limping and felt pain on the out side of the knee and the medial (inside). The next day was a night mare, I could hardly walk, did not sleep the night before and was in great pain. I iced all day and the day after the pain had subsided. There was no swelling or bruising that I could determine, in my 50 years of sprinting I have never had a knee problem. At first I had trouble walking up and down stairs, I continued ice treatment and then started heat after 48 hours. I'm 3.5 weeks into the injury and have tried to jog on grass, I jog, walk, jog, etc. The 1st set is painful. however, the remaining sets feel ok but certainly I cannot sprint. An hour or two after this mini workout the pain on the outside of the knee returns and can actually travel to the inside of the knee. I ice and continue heat and the next day the pain goes away. I no longer limp but when I attempt to do 1 legged squats the right knee will cave, but I can do 2 legged wall slides. After reading some of your answers I have started to ride my stationary bike, to my surprise, the knee "likes" the bike, no pain and the knee seems to be improving, I also bought Vitamin C today and started a regimen of 500mgs 2-3x per day. My questions are; what do you think I did to the knee and can I still jog 1-2x per week along with the bike? It appears that I am going to have to postpone my Fall program, and finally, how long does something like this take in generral to heal, are my sprinting days over? Thank you for everything you do for the community, it is really appreciated.
