Serious hamstring injury

Hello,
I am a male, 49.  I used to do a heck of a lot of running, including frequent distance racing.  About 8 years ago I pulled a hamstring hard while doing sprints.  I seemingly reinjured it once or twice in the succeeding years.  It has never recovered.  I saw a specialist at one point.  Over weeks he repeatedly grinded it with his elbow until it bruised.  It never really worked, just hurt like heck when he did it.  
At this point it hurts bad after I get to about a mile.  It feels like something is hanging loose in there.  Having been this long, it appears it will never heal.  I've tried ice, a hamstring roller, stretching, just about everything.  
Aside from the obvious question of "is there anything left that I can/ should do" (surgery?), my main is: if I invest in a good treadmill, will I aggravate my hamstring when I run on a treadmill?  
My aerobic workout options are now limited without being able to run. I don't feel as good as when I used to run, and I don't sleep as good.

You didn't mention where the injury is,bur regardless it is collagen muscle ligaments and tendons and tissue.The only way it will heal is to let it heal even if you have to walk for a while or some stationary bike workouts.The key to fixing it is to determine where the injury is and how and when it started bothering you and last is to develop a program to rehab it and treat the cause.I would do no running until you can identify those things.I would not talk about surgery or anything radical until you can eliminate all the things you can do for your self.To many horror stories with doctors.I can't get into a lot of detail in email since i can't get my thoughts provided with enough clarity for you to implement.I would be more than happy to talk to you over the phone anytime you want to call me to get very specific on what you need to do if you want to.Just go to my web site for contact page Jeff.I'm in albuquerque NM.It can be fixed.
