snapping hip and knee pain after jogging

QUESTION: Hi, I'm a 24 year old male and I've been walking long distance since about November of 2009, biking long distance since May of 2010, and recently took up short-distance (1 ?2 miles) jogging.  About three weeks ago I walked about a mile and a half carrying a very heavy load on my back.  Ever since then I抳e had a snapping in my hips, and mild knee pain.  The knee pain is not constant, it抯 present about 15 ?20% of the time, and the hip snapping is present about 80% of the time, with pain/discomfort about 60% of the time.  I must emphasize that the pain and discomfort is mild, but I抦 starting to worry because it抯 not going away.  I must also add that I haven抰 been resting; I抳e continued to walk and exercise regularly.  

Is this something serious, or will it go away on its own?  I抦 planning on staying in bed from Friday to Monday to let my joints heal. I usually cannot avoid walking altogether because I don抰 have a car, and the walk to the bus stop is about 4 blocks.
 
Can this go away on its own?  Will I need medication?  Will I eventually need surgery?

ANSWER: Hi Jerremy
First it is not serious and it will not go away by it self,but you do have to address these situations and be patience and consistent with the program.I don't know your height weight and whether or not your carrying a lot of extra weight or very lean with little muscle.The him snapping is probably a tendon alignment over a portion of your hip.It is a tracking and alignment situation along with your mild discomfort in the knee.The best course to take is stationary bike workouts for 30 to 45 min as often as you can.You should see a difference fairly soon since your already in decent shape.You need no medication and will not need surgery.It just takes good old fashion hard consistent work.If you have other questions just get in touch Jerremy.

QUESTION: Thanks John,

I'm 24 1/2, 5'9'', fairly toned but not very muscular, 130 lbs.  

I have great endurance, as I've been able to bike 80 miles all at once fairly recently.  I thought my legs were strong, but I guess I thought wrong.  

One thing I noticed is that the faster I walk, the less noticeable the snapping becomes.  If I walk at a fast pace, I don't feel any snapping at all.  It's only present when I walk at a slow pace.  It also goes away when when I point my foot outwards and walk.  

I have been biking regularly for a little over a year now.  Is there any reason you suggested the stationary bike, and not a regular one?

I'm sure your legs are fine based on that bike ride of 80 miles.The reason for the stationary bike is because it puts you in an exacct position and you can maintain a good medium tension with a medium to high aprox.65 to 80 rpm which is ideal for correcting the tracking and alignment of your waist down.You could not get that riding a regular bike outside due to terrain traffic lights and many other things that would need to be adjusted for and possible start and stops.You need a good steady state ride with no interruptions to maximize the process.You can still ride a regular bike if you want,but for training purposes it is the stationary bike.Does that clear it up for you Jarremy?I have worked with 100's with this program around the world  and i was my first client years ago to correct chondromalacia.Patience is the key.Any other questions just get in touch.
