Knee swelling

Question
I had my left knee scoped about 10 yrs ago.  I've started running about 2 miles a day...5 to 6 times a week.  My knee will occasionally swell and be very painful after my run. Will be tough to walk on for a day or so. I ice and take ibuprofen.  Is there anything I can do to stop this from happenning?

Answer
Great job on starting to run!  Pain is telling your body something is wrong.  Pain is your friend.  I do not believe that it is telling your body to stop running though.  Running is good for us and the human body is made for running.  Please read "Pain, Pain, Pain" for more on what pain is telling us.  The first thing you should try is to run forefoot first. I've seen this cure many injuries and pains.  The key is to start slow!!!  The key is to start slow!!! I said that twice for a reason. If you don't then other injuries will happen.  If you start slow then you'll adapt and be able to run the rest of your life.  For a fabulous video on running with a forefoot strike watch The Barefoot Running Professor.  You do not have to run barefoot to forefoot strike. It is perfectly fine to do in regular running shoes.

If this doesn't alleviate pain then seek out a running expert.  I always suggest experimenting with forefoot running first. It's never not helped in my experience.
