marathon?

Question
Hello,
I wanted to get some advice about marathon training. I am 18 and in the Air Force, so I work out about ever day or everyother day, usually 45 minutes of cardio on a bike or elliptical, and 15 minutes of weightlifting. I also run about 2-3 times a week, but only about 2 miles or so.
I am very interested in becoming a more serious runner, but I don't know where to start because I have always been a relatively weak runner, despite exercising actively in other ways.
I have been considering setting my goal to be running a marathon in June 2005. Does this seem like too short of time to go from running at most 2 miles, to finishing a marathon? Is it even physically possible to get to that level in 8 months time?
I am really interested and motivated, but I don't know if I am being too ambitious...
Is that goal realistic? How can I start?
Thanks! Katy
Answer
dear katy
your present level of fitness is fine to move forward with your plans to run your first marathom in june.do not worry about being a week runner because you have not run enought to judge yet.8 months is plenty of time considering you stay focused and implement a FLIGHT PLAN THAT YOUR COMMITTEd TO following thru with.....how do you start to prepare.....I would strongly recomend to secure a knowledgeble coach.being in the air force you know about doing things right the first time don't you?this is not beause i do this for a living.it is because i have been where you are now only i ran mine on 4 months work and no previous condtioning except golf and tennis and 30 to 35 pounds over weight on a very hilly course in maine in july.I was very stupid.but what do you expect from a ex marine ex jock.It is called EGO.thank god i did not die.oh i forgot to tell you i was just 4 months off a 2 pack a day smoking program for thirteen years.my finishing time was...355.51 and 4 years later 7 pace 3 hours.I made every mistake their is available with injuries for vreification......hope this helps you.......thats how to start...their are many books and opions out there if that is the route you want to go but then which one is for you......I have worked an advised the best for over 20 years both recreational to the super stars and i would love to work with you if your interested.you can contact me by phone and e mail on my web site day or evening.....the flight plan is the most important as you know.anything else feel free to get in touch katy.I will tell you this katy.the marathon will change your life in some way i will garuntee it.it gave me my life today and it has been a fun ride and i'm still in high gear....
The very best to you
