training after illness

2016/7/22 10:13:51

Question
I just had a 24 hour bout with stomach flu and was due to run a 17 mile course this weekend. I am training just to finish the L.A. Marathon. How much time should I allow before I attempt a long run? I'm pretty beat right now. Should I wait until next weekend and rearrange the rest of my training schedule to accomodate?

Thanks, Kim

Answer
Kim,
I would strongly encourage you not to run unless you are fully hydrated.  Drink as much as you can in preparation for the run.  Returning to running within a week of illness is generally okay, as long as hydration is good and you feel okay.  If need be, cut back.  Best of luck.
