Triathlon Training

Question
Mr. DeHart:
I am currently trying to lose weight and train for a triathlon (probably at the sprint distance at this point.)
I'm sure my current weakness will be the run. In the past I have suffered from pretty severe shin splints, and so have shied away from including running in any of my workouts. Therefore, I am the most out-of-shape of beginners (although I can swim and bike with the best of them.)
Can you advise on how to begin a workout regimen and train for a 5k, keeping in mind that while I'm losing weight, I am still losing - and I'm a total beginner?
Thanks so much for your help!
Lorena
