running/jogging pain

Question
First off, I'm 26, about 30 lbs. overweight, and I just started running again after a couple year hiatus.  For the first 2-3 weeks I've was going to the gym 4-5 times a week, jogging 6 mph on a treadmill for 5-6 miles.  Everything was fine until I bumped up the speed from 6 mph to 6.7 mph (or from a 10 minute mile to a 9 minute mile).  My knees were really starting to hurt after a couple of workouts so I stopped jogging for about 1 1/2 weeks until the pain went away.  Now every time I try to run or jog even the littlest bit - I found this out when playing basketball - the upper part of my legs (hamstrings and thighs) ache.  My running shoes are good (having bought them from a running shoe store) and I warm up properly before going out to the gym or basketball court.  What could possibly be the matter?  I know you can't pinpoint what the problem is but, any hint as to what might be wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Dear Damon
Try doing some light streching after all your workouts including basketball and alternate faster running with easy workouts.
Your body is reacting to the long lay off and you have to back off alittle till your body adapts. You also know you should lose those thirty xtra pounds. Also start taking 500mg of vitimin C with your three meals a day. this helps strengthen tissues tendons cells.Be a little more patience damon you have many years in front of you.
Anything else get in touch.
The very best
John
