Headaches

Question
Hi, I have recently started running again. My friends and I ran cross country in high school (6 years ago!) and we are going to run our local marathon as a relay. My leg is 6.9 miles. We have been getting together since January to run around 6 pm. Since we have made the jump to running 6-7 miles at a time, I have been getting horrible headaches that last the rest of the night, until I go to bed. This has never happened to me before, and it only happens on days that I run. OTC meds haven't been helping much. Any ideas on what could be causing this and/or some possible solutions? Thanks!
Answer
Hi Tara
There are a number of diseases that cause headaches, but being a former runner and your just starting back,i would say you have an effort headache.Buildup of latic acid and low carbon dioxide probably cause dilation of blood vessels supplying the brain, resulting in swelling of the brain and headache occurs. There are many things that can cause it including foods, high blood preasure etc.etc.The headaches usually occur within one hour after workout and are located in the front of the head, possibly causing nasuea, weakness and vomiting.Dehydration could also be a culprit.Make sure your well hydrated threw out the day before your runs and also after your runs.It might be a good idea to watch your pace and stay well within yourself. You didn't tell me your height weight, but i will take it you were in the right ratio's.I really think they are effort headaches and nothing more serious and will be gone in time.Dehydration can cause a host of problems and your headaches are one of them.Hope this helps ya tara.Let me know how your doing.
The very best to you
John
