Chondromalacia worsened by elliptical?

Question
I have seen your very helpful and informative answers regarding the topic of chondromalacia patella. I 20 yrs old and 5'0 115 lbs. I have chondromalacia and it seems to me that when I use the eliptical machine, it irritates my knee worse than when I use the treadmill. I know that ellipticals are supposed to be better for your knee... aren't they? but I feel more discomfort in terms of tracking and popping when i'm on the elliptical and I don't experience it on the treadmill. I do cardio 30-60 mins about 4-5 times a week, with quad excercises as well. I know you've suggested using the stationary bike, but with my height i have trouble with that .. haha... and it also seems to bother my knee a little more than the treadmill. What is your opinion on this? should i discontinue elliptical training?
Answer
Hi Joy
Discontinue the elliptical and the treadmill and work with the bike.I would also stop with the quad work.It is the best tool to get you back, and it will also work the quads nicely.I don't no how long you have been rehabbing, but this requires a lot of patience and being consistent. It took me 8 months years back to get control of it.You might even be over doing the quad work and irratating it.You just can't go wrong with the bike. The other thing that the bike does that you can' get any other way,is the sanding down and smoothing out the underside. This one of the keys to a smooth gliding action.Give it time Joy,you will win down the road.Any other questions just get in touch.
All the best
