fibula bruising

Question
I am a beginner runner...I have been running close to a year and have finally reached the 2 mile marker/9.5 min miles-comfortably and in the process of working towards the 3 mile mark. I generally run 4-5 times a week. I am a 43 yr. old female. After my last runs i have noticed some pain at the top of the fibula bone on my right leg.  At first it just felt like a bruise but i could never see one but yet if I pushed in slightly medial to the tip i could feel the bruise.  Well...after today's run i actually see some bruising.  Could I be causing some bruising to tissue from the bones/running impact?

Answer
Leyna,

This is a tough question and in my opinion requires a visit to a sports-minded PT.  Are you sure about the exact location being the fibula?  The most common injury in runners in this general location is irritatiion of the IT band, but bruising is an uncommon symptom.  Do you remember twisting your knee or hitting it on something?  Do you have any ligament issues in your knee, esp. the LCL ligament.  I'm sorry to say that your symptoms are uncommon and I'm stretching to think of something that makes sense without a direct evaluation.
