numb fingers when running

Question
Hi,
I run 3-4 times a week, between 3-5 miles each time. Recently I've noticed that my pinky and ring fingers get numb when I run. I am constantly shaking my hands to try to relieve the numbness, which helps slightly, but not totally. They are slightly cold to the touch and not swollen or red. It generally goes away soon after I've finished my run. Any suggestions as to what is going on? Thanks...
Answer
Lacey,
Is this condition brought on by cold weather? If yes, then I would consider raynaud's syndrome, would recommend seeing a doctor on this one.
If symptoms come on regardless of temperature, then I will say that it happens in a few people that I know, but there is never a definite diagnosis. Most believe that it is caused by decreased blood flow to the hands. Some things that could worsen symptoms are running with tight fists or running with your elbows in extreme flexion (versus relaxed and just slightly bent). I would consider seeing a doctor on this one, just in case there is something. But if you're otherwise healthy and you do not have raynaud's, this might just end up being an annoyance that you'll have to live with.
Good luck, Larry
