clicking behind my knee and pain in front of my ankle

Question
HI. I am a 45 yo f who has always been very active but who only re-started
running about two months ago after 15 yrs. I started at 1/2 mile per day and
am now up to 4.5 3 to 4 times per week. I am generally healthy at 5'8" and
130 lbs.
Lately my left knee has started clicking or snapping when I extend my leg
forward. The clicking/snapping is directly behind the knee in that hollow
area. I don't know what it is but thought that it might have been from the
stretching rather than the actual running as weight bearing doesn't seem to
be the problem.
Also, since hitting 4 miles I have developed pain in the anterior left ankle. It
is not a weight bearing pain but hurts rather when I flex my foot up or try to
walk down stairs.
What the heck is going on? am I too old for running??? Thank you for any
help you can provide me. Oh, I should mention -in case it matters to my
ankles and knee- that my hips are subluxed but they don't seem to mind the
running
Answer
Hi Allison
Over time you have developed some tracking and alignment situations which are now surfacing from years of inactivity. For your knee issue i recommend you do some stationary biking a few times a week to take care of that.As far as your ankle you have developed some tendonitis and possibly a little shin splints.Cure for that is ice it as often as you can and take 500mg vit c with your 3 meals a day.Age has nothing to do with it.It is just lack of fitness and you just have to have a great deal of patience and make your come back gradually.Over time your body will adapt to the stress and you will be fine. Also epson salt baths are great for recovery. If you have any other questions just get in touch.
All the best
