Possible groin strain

2016/7/22 10:07:42

Question
My daughter went to a cross country camp and fell over a tree branch. She was complaining that her groin area hurt after about a mile or two. After camp she took off 5 days and iced her injury. When she ran with me the injury didn't hurt until about 2 miles. I told her to take off two weeks and ice it 3 times a day which she did. After two weeks the pain was still there after the 2 miles. She didn't have any pain until that two mile mark. She has been wearing an ace bandage during the running and it didn't hurt until she stopped. I was wondering if this sounds like a groin strain and if it is can she still run? If she continues to run will the groin strain get worse and is the running doing more damage?

Answer
Hi Robert
Yes she has strained her groin. The adductors are a large group of muscles that pull the leg and thigh inward at the hip. These muscles connect the pelvis bone with the inner margin of the femur. Most runners develop groin pulls  when these muscles are accidentally overstretched during a sudden fall or slip.First i would not use a ace bandage since this just gives a false sense of security.I would not run,but add some stationary biking to maintain her fitness. You just don't want to take the chance of deeper injury at this time. She is going to need to do some strengthening of her adductors and abductors gradually.Other things she can do is ice the area of pain often and include 2 to 3 epson salt baths a week which are fabulous for recovery and start adding 500mg of vit c with the 3 meals a day to enhance recovery of tendons, tissue, collagen. If you would like to talk about this process to get more clarity over the phone Robert you can call me any time from 6am on.Yu can go to my web sate for my contact info.Any other questions just get in touch.

All the best

John
