Help with running knee problem for newbie

Question
Hi John,
I recently took up running 10 months after my last baby. The problem is I think I've jumped into it too fast (I'm running with an experienced runner-friend who's workouts are lunacy).
I now have pain in my right knee. It's located in the soft area underneath my knee cap. I ice the knee after running, as well as use icy hot during the day (I work retail as well as being a full-time mom and am on my feet a lot).
Any suggestions on what this ailment is and how to treat it? I'm anxious to get back working out at full effort, but cannot do so with this pain.
My friend says I should run through the pain, but that doesn't sound right to me.
Sincerely,
Niki
Answer
Hi Niki
You have a slight case of chondromalacia. Her advice is also lunacy. The best tool is to start stationary biking for 30 to 40 minutes as often as you can with high rev's and medium tension and increasing it as you become fitter. In most case this is the result of a tracking and alignment problem. The most important thing is to have a great deal of patience. after a couple of weeks you can test it and see how it is coming.Let me know how it is going.Any other questions just get in touch Niki.
All the best
John
