Post-running Knee Pain

Question
Hi,

I have been a recreational runner for the past 10 years.  It's a hobby and doubles as my workout/stress relief.  I try to run about 3 or 4 times per week, sometimes it is more or less depending on my schedule.  My runs are 4-6 miles and I do about a 8.5 - 9 min/mile pace on mostly flat ground.  For the past couple months, I have been getting a very sharp pain in my left knee the day after I run ever time I bend my leg.  It doesn't hurt if I keep my leg straight, but every time I bend it, like to go up steps, sit in a chair, etc, it hurts very bad.  It usually recovers two or three days later but then returns after my next run.  I went to the doc a couple days ago and she thought that it is likely patella femoral syndrome and even a little tendonitis.  She recommended wearing supportive shoes at all times, gave me a handout on several stretches, prescribed meloxicam - a newer anti inflammatory medication.  She also wants me to completely stop running for two weeks:( to see if gets better.  My question is - does this sound like a good diagnosis/course of treatment to you?  Do you have any other recommendations?  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Heather
First to answer your direct question she is close on the femoral syndrome and tendonitis but that is not the problem. Her course of treatment is non sense and to recommend any kind of meds especially a specific brand such as a newer anti inflammatory meloxicam is totally erisponsibility since she has no idea of the side effects etc.And supportive shoes at all times and a hand out is ludicris. And no medication is going to have any effect on the necessary protocal to eliminate your situation which i see is a slight case of advancing of chondromalacia which is easy to correct and i don't think it is that all to serious. To give you the necessary info to correct your situation and to drill down and get more clarity how it developed, would it be possible for you to call me at your convenience here in albuquerque New mexico at 505 271 5909 MT from 6am on.There is no charge.

I look forward to your
response

All the best
