Running, over-pronation, leg pain and trainers

Question
Hi John
My partner took up running about 6 months ago. A few weeks after he started he visited to the doctor due to foot pain. It conspired that he had flat feet and was suffering from over-pronation. This could be corrected with the correct shoes. I spent some money on some proper road running shoes and support insoles which made a difference.
He is now complaining of shin pain and believes that his shoes are only good for running in for aprox 4 to 500 miles, after that they need replacing.
I distinctly remember the guy in the shop saying that he had a pair of these shoes and they have lasted him 3yrs, I have already spent out on 3 different pairs of trainers before he was informed that he needed trainers designed for road running.
I have told him to see the doctor about the leg pain but am now concerned about getting another request for a fourth pair of trainers in a year.
What I'd like to know is:
A, Could the leg pain be caused by his trainers?
B, Do you have any idea what the leg pain could be?
C, How long do running shoes last in general?
He has only had these for a few months. They are saucony pro-grid omni 8.
Thanks very much in advance.
Sarah
