Foot Pain during a marathon

Question
I just ran the Disney marathon and at about mile 20 my foot started to hurt along the top, outside. It seemed to start happening when I was running at an angle on an off ramp that looped around for a highway. It was not sharp or shooting but started dull and got a bit stronger as I kept running. Being that I had no real time goal just an enjoyable event, I walked about 3 or 4 of the last 6 miles, with it continuing to ache while walking. At one point I ran through the pain for a few minutes and then the pain went away but I didn't want to do anything serious to it so I just backed off and the ache returned. I finished the race without much increase in pain and walked around the parks after, still aching but not really grimacing but sort of a limp. The next day I awoke and the top outside of the foot was bruised. Not black and blue, but a reddish purple and still sore. Did not hurt to push on the bruise and was able to walk on it gingerly. Have been using ice at least 2 times a day. Bruise went away the same day it appeared and I feel much better each day since the race on Sunday, but some of the pain/ache has shifted to the back outside of the heel/Achilles area. Been 4 days now and still feeling better and better each day with almost no pain but wondering if I did something to my foot or just sore from running a full marathon?? Always concerned when it comes to soft tissue
Thank you
Answer
Hi Marc
Nothing serious, but you always have to treat every injury in a serious way because it will get worst.Your very smart to be concerned.Based on when you first noticed it on the angled off ramp, you probably over stretched some of the supporting tendons and ligaments that keeps the ankle stabilized and functioning as it should.Keep icing and add 500mg vit c with your 3 your meals a day to enhance recovery of tendons,ligament5s and collagen.I would also recommend you use a stationary bike to maintain your fitness for a while before you get back into running to insure all those tendons and ligaments and collagen has had a chance to heal and strengthen. To see what i'm talking about just google ankle injury and look at the images from upper left hand corner and then you can appreciate why i say don't rush back.If not they can become very unstable over time.Just give it plenty of time, because probably a lot of micro damage.Any other questions just get in touch or call if you like here in albuquer que NM.
All the best
John
