Runners knee?

2016/7/22 10:06:39

Question
I believe I got runners knee during a session of hill sprints or 'interval training'.
I a back to regular jogging but its been over two months and the knee still flares up a bit but not as much.
Should I stop running? I  have arthritis in my back which my doctor says was from the constant bouncing on my tractor.
I have good shoes, should Itake a certain drug or vitamin?

Answer
This Chicago, South Loop & Elmhurst Sports Med Podiatrist says.......

Dear Gord,

Forget drugs and vitamins.
You can take regular multiday vitamins for general health-if you are not sure about your diet.
You can take an occasional Advil or Alleve  for a few days to quiet down a painful area.
Runner's knee is a diagnosis given when you don't really know what the problem is.
For example-if the knee that hurts leans in a little-then the pain may be relieved with an orthotic.
Osteoarthritis may benefit from Glucosamine Sulfate (weak studies show some possible benefit).
As long as you are not overweight, have good running shoes, and possibly orthotics, then running is beneficial.
Try a sleeve knee brace.
Check-out our website at AnkleNFoot.com for examples of a knee brace.
See a sports podiatrist for a runner's evaluation.
Additional general advice:

PRICE
Protect-Wrap the knee -or walk in a way that it doesn't hurt
Rest-Make sure you get a few days rest during the week, until it quiets down
Ice-On and of for 3-5 days. Mild heat is OK for stiffness-but not pain-especially in a fresh injury.
Compress-Mild ace wrap the area-which will also protect
Elevate-if it throbs.

Hope This Helps
Good Luck!
