Question
Hi John. I'm 5 weeks out from a marathon and have come down with a
case of bursitis. I took a week off from running and today I was only able
to get in 2.9 miles before the sharp stabbing pain kicked in. I've been
using ice, ibuprofen and stretching. Getting worried since I'm missing key
long runs. Ran a marathon on October31st so I'm noy completely out of
shape but have only done a 16 miler with this training so far. Any advice
on getting this healed. Thinking about getting a cortisone injection as a
last resort. Thank you!
Answer
Hi Carly
First i wouldn't get a cortisone. Many problems like what your experiencing are directly related to tracking and alignment.I would recommend over the the next 2 weeks is do all your training on an up right stationary bike. You can do anything on the bike that you do running.Long run of 2 to 21/2 hrs replace it with that time on bike.Same with daily workouts. Then you can do a easy test run in 2 weeks.Mean while your maintaining your fitness and getting in some long stuff and hopefully you can eliminate some of those alignment and tracking problems causing that situation. Two other things that will help you is 500 mg vit c with your 3 meals a day and 3 20 minute epson salt baths a week 30 minutes before you go to bed to maximize healing of tendons ligaments and collagen and relax the muscles.Any questions just get in touch.
All the best
John
