Sudden Ankle Pain

2016/7/22 10:05:59

Question
John,

I have been running consistently for the past 6 or so years with this year being the first I ran outdoors in the winter. In the past I ran on an indoor track. During the last few weeks my left inner ankle has started to hurt when I run under the bone that sticks out. At first I thought it was my shoes as I was due for a new pair but I get the same pain in my new pair too.

My feet are pretty flat and I have custom orthotics in a stability shoe. I work at a running shoe store so my gait has been evaluated but I wonder if I am getting too much stability control.

Any help with how to fix this and or what's causing it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Wes
I'm not a believer in orthotics or motion control shoes. It is possible you have a little bit of shin splints. That is one area besides the frontal shin.Ice would be useful as often as you can.I do think your right about to much stability.I can't stand the shoes today. I have been running for 34 years. They are to controlling with no natural flow of the foot.Any questions just get in touch or call if you like here in Albuquerque NM for more clarity.

All the best

John
