Calves?

2016/7/22 10:05:53

Question
I started running in March again, and have stuck with it since. I run 5 days a week, normally somewhere that is 2-7 miles. About 4 weeks ago I ran a hard mile as my workout, and after I was done, my calves started to hurt. The best way I can describe it was that it felt like they where going to turn to stone and crack off. Since then they've kept hurting. They rarely hurt when I'm not working out - only when I wake up - and when I'm run they only irritate me. When they really hurt is after I'm done running, for about 30 or 40 minutes. I never want to sit down, because I'm sure that won't do them any good, but they hurt so much to put pressure on after I run. Is there a reason for this? Is it just muscle building? When I stretch them it feels amazing while I'm stretching, but then it hurts worse after. Ibuprofen helps, I think, But like I said the pain goes away less than an hour after I'm done running. Would biofreeze or icyhot do the trick? Thanks!

Answer
Some people have issues with this, some more than others due to body chemistry, salt intake, and how your body responds to running. Try some of these exercises and tips on this page: http://irunlikeme.blogspot.com/2011/04/learn-what-to-do-with-tight-calves-when.h...

It talks about ice/heat, stretching, making your calves stronger, compressions socks, and some other tips that should help relieve the pain. If it keeps up though, head to the doctors, there could be some internal thing happening that could be causing this issue.

good luck.
