pain while jogging

Question
Dear Dr. Tsatsos,
I am seventeen years old and in fall 2012 I've started jogging regularly up to 5 times a week. I'm actually pretty good in shape and I've also been jogging for some time but not that often. However, for about one week now the insides of my lower legs hurt pretty bad and it doesn't feel at all like a muscle ache. I also warm up every time before I start running and also afterwards. Do you have any idea where this pain could come from ?
Sincerely, Natalie
Answer
Dear Natalie,
This Chicago Podiatrist, Elmhurst Podiatrist & West Loop Podiatrist says.......
Your jogging pain sounds like mild tendonitis or myositis of the flexor muscles of the leg that plantarflex the foot & raise your arch secondary to jogging. You may have stretched these muscles with possibly the wrong footwear & or terrain, and probably overuse.
Go see your local board certified podiatrist to pinpoint your diagnosis
Fo now do PRICE
Protect- limit the movements that aggravate it.
Rest-Speaks for itself-rest it.
Ice- Will help if it is painful and a little with any swelling. Use heat for stiffness only after one more week. If it hurts-go back to icing.
Compress-Ace wrap
Elevate-Will help if it throbs or swells.
Improvement will be slow-because the leg is used daily in all weight bearing activities.
Good Luck!
