Gluten and bonking

2016/7/22 10:04:33

Question
I have heard this nonsense going on at the track, which I call nonsense but I'd be curious to hear a second opinion.
In specific it is "if you eat gluten free you don't bonk on your runs"...nonsense to me because the so-called bonking is about glycogen - a carb, while gluten is a protein by the way.
In my opinion people are a bit too crazy of this gluten-free hysteria and they're seeing gluten everywhere without even knowing what it is.
Am I right?

Answer
Dear Anne,

This Orthopedic Chicago Podiatrist located in West Loop 60661, Roscoe Village 60618, Ukrainian Village 60622, Elmhurst 60126 & Bartlett 60103 says,
You're right. Gluten has nothing to do with bonking. People wish to be Olympians but need an excuse when they come in second.
For a good article explaining bonking- http://www.runnersworld.com/nutrition-for-runners/the-science-behind-bonking
Hope this helps & Good Luck!
