FINDING A TRAINER WHO WILL ALSO BE PART OWNER
Question
HOW CAN I FIND A TRAINER WHO WILL ALSO BE 1/2
OWNER? TO ME IT SEEMS IF THE TRAINER IS PART OWNER HE HAS A GREATER STAKE/GAIN IN THE HORSE'S
RACING AND WELFARE. IS THIS TRUE? ALSO, WOULD YOU SUGGEST CLAIMING A HORSE (25K TO 50K) OR BUYING A YEARLING. I'M LOCATED IN SOUTHERN CAL.
THANKS,
Answer
hi eric----- well i have trained horses for over 30 years and i find that owning the horse on your own is much better for all involved in the horse. as a trainer i much prefer to train for the owners, and not to get involved in a percentage in the horse. you always, no matter what, get into disagreements about what to do for the horse. in the long run the horse will suffer from the problems. i train and charge a fee fo the month. i expect the owner to pay for the shoeing---vet---transportation. i pay for all of the training on my end. the galloping----feeding---barn care---- groming etc. i always encourage the owner to invest in a good young horse, that way you can get a fresh horse and make him or her into a good race horse. thanks ED HESS
