Question
I am 24 years old and want to be a bloodstock agent. I do not know anyone in the industry but would love to be an apprentice to a willing teacher. I qm a fast learner and have a passion for horses. I am bright , intelligent and very personable. I love working with people but I also love horses. Mixing that with my business background and education and this is the profession I want to commit to. I sther any advice or direction for a person as hungry as I am to get in the business?
I appreciate your time and advice
Answer
Jarod,
It sounds like you have the important qualities but need a start. You will find your best opportunities by applying for the "anyjob" at large equine entities such as Jockey CLub, BloodHorse Publishing, etc. then networking your way inside. hard to get started with an bloodstock agent intially as they tend to not hire apprentices unless referred. Do you live near any of the major thoroughbred cities, like NY, Chicago, or even baltimore? Even those places would business office from which you could begin to make contacts. Check out a publication from BloodHorse, it costs $20 and it the yellow pages of the industry, named The Source, and it has a listing of all bloodstock agents, associations, racetracks, perfect place to find contacts and addresses for resumes.
