Question
So, do they tend to spook while they are galloping? or are they usually too busy running? I know that I need to be in a mindset that doesn't allow me to be timid while riding them, but is there a secret to the success? I mean, if I fall off, how do I keep myself from getting timid again? I know in the huntseat you always dust yourself off and go jump the same line again, is it kind of the same process? Thanks for your advice - I really needed it!

Hi, I am 21 and been riding show horses since I was 7. I consider myself a well experienced rider in the hunter area, but I was recently asked to do a "trial" period at a racing facility. I have never ridden or trained or breezed a race horse - ever. I don't know what to expect and I can't say I know any of the terminology surrounding the sport. All I know is this trainer has 30 2 year olds that he needs someone to ride against 2 - 3 other horses on the track. What advice can you give me?! What sort of regimen should I expect? Is this "breezing"? What are the responsibilities of the rider? Is there a certain strategy? I informed the trainer immediately that I had no race horse experience other than owning a retired race horse and turning him to the hunter/jumper ring. He said he needed a rider who could keep the horse well forward and who is aware of their horse's position among other competitors on the track. I just need some direction before I go out there and seem clueless! I appreciate any advice you can give me!

hi sarah well i am glad that you have riding experience. being a exercise rider on a thourghbred race horse is like night day . especially breaking and exercising 2 year olds . they are very green and will do just about anything very you can imagine. i guess the trainer is looking for a exercisr rider to get the 2 year old galloped every day and get plenty of milrs under them before they get up to their first breeze. that is a fast work out eother form the gate or from the pole on the track. 2 year lds are usually very green to learn things and you will have to be very alert when you are riding them, they will spook from anything they are not familiar with and be very curious also about you and everything around them. please take your time when you get up on them and when you ar going to and from the track. you will have to gallop them in sets to get them use to bumping each other and getting dirt in their faces when you get behind each other. do not jerk on their mouths as they are very tender and the bit is new to them. be pacient with them and try to teach them the same thing untill you feel they know it. allow them to relax and get use to you before you ry to push them into a task. it is best to watch the other riders and what they do. remember a horse can only m think of one thing at a time well good luck in you new job. ALWAYS EMEMBER TO TREAT THE HORSE WITH KINDNESS AT ALL TIMES. thanks ED

hi sarah yes you dust your self off anf get right back on again. if you ride 2 year old you will have a lot of problems with them as they are babies and will have to learn what to do.so you will just have to take it with a greain od slat and go about your buisness. just be yourself and get on and ride them to the best of your ability. thanks ED
