getting training experience
Question
I have a small stable in North Carolina and have been a Dressage instructor, breeder, competitor for ten years and a horse owner for 25 years. I have loved watching horse racing since I was a child and contemplated being a jockey when I was a child but was stopped by an article I read by a jockey who said the sport was extremely dangerous. I am the perfect size for a jockey but over the age to start a career. I do believe I could break and train babies as well as train 2 and 3 year olds since I have broken several babies on my farm.
I know I can train horses to do just about anything. Now that polytrack is coming to the fore in horse racing and it seems to have compelling numbers that minimize break downs, I think I seriously would like to learn how to train a race horse and see if I can meet with some success there.
What is the best way to get involved as an assistant trainer or a exercise pony rider, in otherwords, hands on experience?
Thanks!
Elsa
Answer
hi as a assiantant trainer. if you can go to a race track near you and find a trainer that needs a good assistant then that is what i would do for sure. since you have so much previous exp i would think that you could pick up that type of position very easuly, hope this helps you and my best wishes go with you thanks ED HESS
