Injuries that occur to race horses
Question
Hi my name is Veronica Villarreal and I am a student at Purdue University. I am currently working on a project for my interviewing class which causes me to persuade someone why they need insurance for their raceing horses. I am somewhat familiar with the injury called "Mud Fever or Scratches" and i was just wondering how much the typical treatment for an injury like this would cost?
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Veronica
Answer
I can't answer this question but you could call one of two major vet practices in Lex that deal with racing.
Rood and Riddle or Hagyard Davis McGee, they will google for you. Good luck with your project.
I will say that most only insure racer for mortality, to replace their value in the event of loss of life, health insurance for procedures will likely be way high, and not a good risk investment, as racing is so risky.
We estimate $40,000 per year per race horse for training, vet, and shipping, and this is typically right on target, even including a few extra procedures like oxygen treatment, accupuncture, and minor outpatient surgeries.
Hope this is helpful.
