Training a Horse
Question
Hello:
I have a year old Quarter/Throughbred horse that I want to train for races. The colt is very gentle and its the first time I start training a horse that does not know what to do already. What should you recommend to start training him? MOre time? when its time, how should I start. Do you recommend giving him vitamins and minerals through IV's?
Answer
hi -- well i would let the horse grow up to at least to a 2 yr old. you can break him to the saddle ,bridle and teach him to long line or ground drive to get use to the bit in his mouth. you have to let him grow into his knees. all yearlings have open knees and they have to cloe up . you can have him exrayed when he is 2 , to see if his knees were closed. i would give him a reg feed , oats and sweetfeed while he is growing. i would not add any vits in any jugs, as he would not need anything like that .i would send him to a good 2 yr old breaking farm ,as they would take their time and break him properly with lots of other 2 yr olds. remember that all young horses have to be taught everything from scratch. all 2 yr olds might have shin problems too. and you have to be on top of his training when he starts out. hope this helps you thanks ED HESS
