2yo filly
Question
I own a 2 yo filly that has shown a lot of speed in her workouts but fails to relax and does not finish strong. We just put her on bleeder medication and that may help. What I would like to know if you have any training tips that could help her to relax? Thanks, Carey
Answer
Carey,
I wish that I could give you the answer, but unfortunately, this an impossible question to answer without seeing/knowing the horse in question.
A few things to consider:
How far is she working, and how often? Young horses, especially fillies, can get "speed crazy, if worked too hard, too often.
Blinkers often help a nervous horse to relax. Have you tried them yet?
What about your rider? Is he actively trying to relax her the first part of the work, or is he getting into her every step of the way? Try just galloping her normally, then ease her into a good work, saving the real speed for the last part.
Lastly, what does your vet think? Many times what we think is nerves is actually some small soreness that gets bad enough by the latter part of a work to make the horse start to quit. The pain associated with working then causes the horse to get more and more nervous about working. Look her over with a fine tooth comb.
Good Luck with her,
