Stakes race fees
Question
My wife and I are new to the ownership of Thoroughbreds and want to learn as much as possible. How and where do we find the cost of nomination, entry and starting fees for various stakes races?
Answer
Gary,
Congratulations on your new Thoroughbred venture. Obviously you must have bought some very nice stock, if you need to look for stakes already, LOL.
In order to find the information about stakes races that you're looking for, you can call the racing office of whatever track you're running at and ask for a condition book. This is a book that lists all of the planned races at the track for a specified period. In the book will be a list of all the stakes offered during that period, along with the information on nominations, entry fees, etc. Alternatively, if you are interested in a particular race or two, you could just ask the secretary about those specific races, and they will tell you the info. I believe that the BloodHorse magazine also lists upcoming stakes nominations in the back of the magazine each week, as well.
Good Luck!
