Starting a breeding farm
Question
I am looking for a mentor, and would like to have any advice on how to start breeding thoroughbred race horses. I own Tennessee Walkers at the moment so I have experience with horses. Any help would be appreciated.
Answer
Kenneth,
You're asking a question that can't really be answered in this short a venue.
If you have no experience with Thoroughbreds, then the first thing that I would suggest is to immerse yourself in the industry first, and read and study everything that you can find on pedigrees and breeding basics. Then you will need a good pedigree analyst to help you choose your broodmare band, and a good repro vet close by your farm.
You'll also need some deep pockets and a lot of patience. Thoroughbred breeding isn't for the faint of heart. Good mares are expensive, fees for good studs are even worse, and the the monetary return is iffy at best. But the rewards can be tremendous as well, and that's what keeps us going, right?
Best of luck,
