Breeding Question
Question
Hi. I recently took an older TB mare on trade for a nutty quarter horse that wasn't fitting into my lesson program. When I looked at her papers, I noticed a little certificate attached that the mare had been nominated to the breeders cup. This started me looking into her pedigree. She is a Bering daughter/ Sea Bird granddaughter on top and a Grey Dawn granddaughter on bottom. Her name is Jamaica Beat. This seems to be really nice breeding and where I was going to use her as a lesson horse while breeding her for sporthorse foals, I was thinking that it would be a good thing to breed her at least once to make a nice TB, to honor the good breeding she has. I was wondering what TB line makes a nice "nick" with her breeding. Have you as a trainer had any experience with/ worked with horses from the Bering mares and do you have an idea what line would cross best with her? I don't have a great deal of money for a stud fee and certainly no money to race the foal, I think I would look to possibly sell it to a racing home. I know that before I got her she was making appendix quarter horse foals for a farm here in Illinois, I just don't know if she has ever produced any TB foals, and that seems a shame, given the time and thought that was put into her breeding. Just trying to do right by her.
Answer
hi well remember it is always 60% on the mares side of the family and 40% on the studs side of the family. you could always look her up . the Kentucky blood horse would have her records to see if she had any TB foals. i do not know Bering , so not sure where for you to find a stud to bred her. there are studs out there with free stud fees. they need to get foals on the ground , so they will five you free stud fees for your mare to breed. a good breeding farm may take your mare to breed and give you the first foal for the amore look in to that. hope this helps you. thanks ED HESS
