thoroughbred identification
Question
Has the Jockey Club considered going to a microchip system to id horses?
Answer
Hi Mary:
Thanks for your question. Yes, although lip tattooing and cowlick identification markings are still the standard, The Jockey Club is very slowly leaning toward microchip implants for identification.
On March 3, 2006 The Jockey Club added Microchip Database to Interactive registration as a free service. On their website, they state that since 1999, Ireland and Great Briton have been using microchips and Puerto Rice has been chipping since 2003. The State of California, using Federal Grant monies began implanting chips in 500 thoroughbreds in 2006 and have approval for 3,500 more - the website does not detail any further implants in California. The Jockey Club of Canada began implants in 2008.
So to answer your question, it appears that they will eventually go to the microchip, however, as with all things that have worked well for years, it might take a long time to get the chip implanting done to all horses.
Thanks again for your question and I hope this has given you some help in the realm of thoroughbred identification.
