starting in the business
Question
I am 27 years old. My mom trains dressage horses and I have raised, shown, and trained my own horses for 10 years, but my true love is thoroughbred racing. I am trying to get into the business and would happily work for free starting from the ground up on a farm or at the track. Grooming, hotwalking or running erands. But I don't know how to go about finding a mentor. Some one who is willing to teach me the tricks of the trade. Do you have any suggestions? I've tried to "pad my resume" by getting my veterinarian technicians degree, and started the paper work to get my "grooms license"....I also frequent my local tracks. But I don't want to "waste" any ones time by asking around....I know every one at the track is extremely busy....
Answer
hi you have to go to the race track and ask for a job in the stables. just be honest with the trainer that you will be working for and tell him what kind of experience you have around horses and that you would like to become a trainer in the future. if you get hired you will have to do what ever work is available. you can clean stalls walk hots and groom . sooner or later the trainer will see what kind of guy you are and how much interest you have in learning the trade. if you really want to become a trainer you will find a way to work your way up to the job. good luck in your future . thnaks ED HESS
