blood counts
Question
on your site you state the importance of blood counts to establish peak performance. I've heard of this before.i googled blood counts for horses and got an article on it but i came away kinda confused, i guess chemistry wasn't my best subject in school. so I'd like to approach a vet about do this type of testing. what type of test should i ask for and of course what kind of coast i'am i looking at.
Answer
You should ask your vet for a CBC. This is a complete blood count and it cost 30 to 50 dollars plus whatever they charge to come where you are to draw the blood. My track vet does it for 30 bucks.
You can also ask for a what is a basic blood screen or a blood chemistry analysis. This will screen the plasma for deficiencies of vitamins and minerals. This test also contains indicators regarding proper muscle function, kidney health and other areas that may be effecting the animal's performance.
Your vet should be able to analyz the test results and answer any questions you have about specifics of the test. It is best to have a CBC drawn at different stages of training to see how the horse is progressing or if there are any nutritional deficiencies that can be full filled.
Hope this helps,
