racing manager
Question
hello sir, a person told me that he is an ex-jockey as well as a racing manager for 2 owners. may i know what does "racing manager" mean in horse racing terms?
Answer
Hi Rohit,
A Racing Manager working for owners is quite common in most racing countries. An owner may have a number of horses with different trainers and needs someone to keep track of the day to day management of the horses. He would discuss with each trainer the programme for the horses, help choose jockeys, races etc and report back to the owner. It takes a lot of the day to day work off the shoulders of the owner.
Jockeys also have managers who book them rides, look after travel and accommodation bookings and generally make sure they have enough work and are in the right place at the right time. They will usually also look after the jockeys finances, making sure they are paid all that they are due and paying any expenses incurred.
Racing Clubs also have Racing Managers. They are responsible for programming suitable races, managing the track and associated buildings and assets, and dealing with owners and trainers.
Some Racing Stables also have Racing Managers. They are responsible for working with Racing Club Racing Managers and owners/trainers in all things related to the programmes, travel, resource management etc, leaving the trainer clear to concentrate on the preparation of the horses and the implementation of the programme for each horse.
As you can see the title Racing manager has several meanings and slightly different responsibilities according to employers needs.
Hope this explains clearly,
