feeding all horses at same time
Question
hello sir, at what time you feed all your stable horses? lets suppose you have given a fast work to a horse around 6:30am and a pair of horses around 8am. then, would you feed all these 3 horses at same time or it differs?
Answer
I feed my horses 10-12 hours apart. I do not feed them before training since I want them fed at least a few hours before exercise and we don't get to the barn at 4 a.m. We feed morning grain about 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. and evening grain around 9 to 10 p.m. They always have plenty of hay to eat 24 hours a day. I don't care at what times the horses are fed as much as I do the time between feedings. Most barns feed dinner at 4-5 p.m. but they are at the barn at 5 a.m. and may train some of the horses on a full belly. I don't like to do this. Some will feed after training and then as early as 4 p.m. which is just a rush to get done and go home early. The other reason to feed late evening is to check on the horses and make sure all is well in the barn and everyone is where they are supposed to be. It's also a good time to fill up water buckets.
