race mare and vaginal wind

Question
Hello Don,
Bought a Miaden TB mare OTT to be covered this year. When the vet went to perform the clitoral swab - he found she had been internally caslicked and had to cut the opening to perform the swab. I appreciate caslicking the external lips of the vulva, but what condition would have caused a vet to caslick her internally?
She didn't get in foal, lost condition whilst she was at the stud farm and since getting her home, 'horses' a lot #walking the paddock and screaming out to the other horses#. I suspect she is 'sucking' rubbish in via her vulva, however I am ignorant about what this term actually means or what to look for to understand what her ailment might be. She certainly doesn't look well in the coat.  I'm drenching her again today as she hasn't picked up since her drench 2 weeks ago and is scouring on a hard feed twice a day of 4 litres of lucerne chaff and 2 litres of Hygain pellets #per feed# with grass 5 - 6 biscuits of our home grown grass hay. She is in a 2.5 acre paddock with access to clean fresh water.
I look forward to your thoughts and any information you can direct me to so that I understand more about her condition.
Many thanks,
Justine

Answer
Hi Justine,
The practice of caslicking is far more widespread than one might think and is now quite common in more developed countries.
I am no expert on it but can point you towards good source information at, http://chris-thomas.suite101.com/what-caslicking-a-mare-is-all-about-a221385
You can also google caslicking and you will find a wide range of information.

I would be concerned that your mares loss of condition and unusual social behaviour could be something unrelated so I would consult your vet about this.
I am reluctant to give advice where I have not examined the horse and therefore may lead you down a wrong path.
I am sorry that I can not resolve your dilema however I suspect your vet will be able to.
