good horse - good jockey
Question
hello sir. lets suppose you are preparing a horse for KENTUCKY DERBY. you would obviously hire a good jockey for that horse. so, how many days before the race, would you hire that jockey to ride that horse in the workouts for him/her to understand the horse, how it works with him/her to ride well in the race?
should there be a close bond between the horse and jockey. here in india, our racing is different. good jockey is hired by the trainer, he is instructed thoroughly and its is in his hands to win the race or not riding that horse.
Answer
The ideal situation is to have the same jockey who has been successful on this particular horse from the start of it's career. Sometimes the jockey, who has been winning on the horse, will get another call on a different trainer's horse and must choose between the two. This is not always an easy decision of which horse is best. One trainer may have more stakes horses to offer the jockey if he chooses what may be the less obvious choice. A trainer will usually know who will be available to ride as the season plays out so he will try and use his choice as often as possible so the jockey does feel comfortable with the horse and to make sure the relationship is a good match.
