book on racehorse training
Question
hello sir. can you please suggest me books on how to become a thoroughbred flat racehorse trainer? i am still in starting stage. please suggest me a basic guide.
Answer
There are some great books on conditioning horses, but I do not know of anything that can teach on becoming a licensed trainer. The rules on licensing vary track to track and country to country.
As far as training methods go, The Fit Racehorse by Tom Ivers is a great book on training although his methods should only be practiced by an experienced horseman. His type of training method requires someone to pay very close attention to how the horse handles the program. The use and full understanding of heart rate monitors is a must if you interval train as Tom Ivers teaches. This book is over the heads and beyond comprehension of most U.S. trainers. You must have quality and sound horses and a very good exercise rider who will listen and follow instructions precisely.
Another great book is "Conditioning To Win" by Equine Research Publications. Training Thoroughbred Horses by Preston Burch. You may also look into "Feed To Win" which is the most basic and easy to understand guide to training.
Reading books, alone, is not a practical way to learn how to properly care for horses. I suggest gaining experience as an assistant for many years and taking some veterinary classes before taking on a horse to training by yourself.
