swimming schedule for racehorses
Question
hello sir, how should i plan up the swimming schedule for thoroughbred racehorses? i mean, how many times should i make a thoroughbred racehorse to swim per week?
Answer
Swimming is not a race training exercise. I only use swimming for rehabilitation of injuries for horses who can't put weight on the injured leg. This will maintain a certain amount of physical fitness and is ideal for cardiac and pulmonary maintenance. Swimming a healthy horse is simply a waste of time and can cause more problems especially for a nervous horse who dislikes swimming. Ulcers may develop in some horses when they are put through this type of stressful exercise. Hoof health may also be compromised by being soaked for long periods without being completely dried. There is a place for swimming, but I do not recommend for a healthy horse looking to gain fitness.
