modern way of breaking horses to ride

hello sir. earlier baby horses were broken by turning them loose into an open arena with the rider on the back and the horse is made to buck until it gets tired as i have seen in an animated movie called SPIRIT : THE STALLION OF CIMERRON. but, these days, riders are said to lay back over the baby horse, the handler would be instructed to walk the horse in a big circle. how the horse gets broken by making a boy or rider lay back of the horse?
