small feet horses - fast runners
Question
hello sir, should a racehorse have small feet or large feet? my uncle told me that small feet horses can run faster in the race whereas large feet horses need to put more effort in taking out a stride. is he correct?
Answer
Yes, he is correct in the statement as it is written, but much should be considered when looking at each individual horse and how his feet are sized in relation to the rest of his body. A smaller foot and finer boned legs give the horse less mass to bring around for each stride which would require less energy. The length of the leg and cannon bone should be considered as well. Fine bone is also generally denser than large bone. You want a large enough foot to absorb the shock and distribute concussion. So to say a small foot is better, this is not entirely true. The foot should match the horse in size and shape.
