wedge shoes for weak tendons
Question
hello sir, can i use a wedge shoe on horses whose tendons are very weak?
Answer
You can do this, but the tendon will never become stronger if the tendon doesn't get enough stress to build strength. The horse with tendon issues will most likely break down if he continues to race without proper healing or conditioning. If I had a horse retired from racing and used as simply a riding horse, I would use wedges to make him more comfortable if he has an old tendon injury. There are horses that race with front shoe wedges, but usually because the have conformation issues that need to be corrected with shoeing. Low heals sometimes is corrected with wedges. Hind shoe wedges are commonly used to relieve stress on the stifles.
