Finding a licensed groom

2016/7/15 11:28:17

Question
Hello,

I have been a thoroughbred racehorse owner for almost 6 years. Recently, I passed my trainers exam in Kentucky, by the states chief steward.

Now that I can legally train thoroughbred racehorses, I need some advice as how to go about finding a good groom
for my stable. The person would have to be licensed.

Also, I know a person who has taught horsemanship classes at a local college, and she is interested in possibly becoming a groom. She has about 35-40 years experience with horses. She probably has done almost everything that a licensed groom would do. How can I find out what she would have to do to become a licensed groom ?

I have a horse that is ready to be trained, but I need to hire a groom before I even consider bringing the horse to the racetrack (Turfway Park). He is out of Star Programmer,
which is a son to Storm Cat.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks,

Tim

Answer
hi well if you only have one horse at this time to train, then i would expect you to do all of the work on the horse. if and when you get ready to run the hore in a race then you can hire a groom to run the horse for you at the track. when i was training at the tracks i would always prefer to do everything myself , but you do need someone else to help you ren the horse and cook him out. so i would at least start out by doing all of the work on your horse till you deem it necessary to hire some help. there are always some good grooms looking for a job at the tracks or training farms. as the groom you will  really get to know your horse inside and out, which is a very good thing to know, as you will need  to know how your horse is preparing for his race. when you get a bigger stable , then of course you will need help to do all of the work around the stables.  hope this helps you. thanks ED HESS
