How did the tainui canoe get its name?
According to Māori tradition, the Tainui canoe was named after the star cluster Matariki (Pleiades). The canoe was said to have been guided to New Zealand by the star cluster, which was visible in the night sky during the month of June. The name Tainui is derived from the words "tai", meaning ocean, and "nui", meaning big or great. The Tainui canoe is considered to be one of the most important canoes in Māori history and is said to have brought the first Māori people to New Zealand.
